The HAGEN group of companies was founded by Mr. Rolf C. Hagen in 1955 as a one man operation in Montreal. With careful and effective management decisions and the help of his two brothers Dieter and Horst, Mr. Hagen has nurtured the family of companies into the largest and most effective privately run pet manufacturer and distributor in the world. Included in the manufacturing arm are two wholly owned plants. HAGEN Industries manufactures high quality bird cages for the world and a full range of aquarium sizes for the Canadian Market was established early in the history of the corporation. In addition it also utilizes state-of-the-art packaging techniques to produce a full range of bird seeds for the domestic and international market demands. Also located in Montreal, is the Liquids Manufacturing Plant which is responsible for the packaging and production of the Total Care Liquid Products, Cycle and S.O.X. Stain and Odor Remover.

The newest manufacturing plant, HAGEN Pet Foods Inc. Located in Waverly, New York, Hagen Pet Foods is owned and operated by Rolf C. Hagen Inc. The facility is centrally located to serve all major North American markets, including Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Buffalo and also ships its products all over the world, including Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australia. Hagen Pet Foods manufactures high quality foods such as NUTRIENCE Super Premium dog and cat food, TROPICAN Super Premium bird food, LAGUNA Pond Fish Food and other specialty foods. The state-of-the-art facility is an excellent example of Hagen's commitment to produce the best possible product on the market. Hagen Pet Foods continues to meet this challenge by providing a facility where quality and service are and always shall be, the number one priority.

The HAGEN Avicultural Research Institute (HARI) has become a major force in the captive breeding and research into nutrition of large birds such as parrots, cockatoos and macaws to name but a few. Founded in 1985 by Mark HAGEN, this facility has provided vast amounts of valuable research data in all aspects of captive bird husbandry. From indoor aviary design, cage construction, bird breeding to the vital elements of avian nutrition, H.A.R.I. has provided the most current data for the formulation and production of the best nutritional products for all pet cage birds.

A research facility was opened specifically to forward research into all aspects of fish keeping in the hobbyist environment. The HAGEN Aquatic Research Station (H.A.R.S.) is fully equipped with over 100 aquariums, the facility has already been instrumental in toxicity studies in all the new Total Care products.

As well, it provides the opportunity to continue to test and refine leading edge products in all areas of the aquarist field of interest. It is an ongoing force in the perfection of new products to add to the FinCare, BioCare and FloraCare line as well as participating in new research into defining the nutritional requirements of all types of aquarium and pool fish. Just as in the past, you can expect new and innovative products being developed and marketed on an ongoing basis.

HAGEN has been a major contributor to modernizing the University of Guelph's Veterinary College research capabilities. The HAGEN AquaLab is a state-of -the-science aquatic research facility that enable research on the extremely wide variety of aquatic organisms. Habitats as diverse as the Arctic Ocean and a tropical rain forest pool can be simulated by the environmentally controlled chambers and rooms in Aqualab.

The HAGEN Aqualab includes four major components, animal holding facilities; an ambient environment to replicate aquatic systems for experimental work under natural conditions; controlled environments to allow precise control of temperature, photoperiod and salinity; a culture area with optimal conditions for rearing algae and zooplankton.
